TRANSGRESSIVE
Non-conformist Approaches to the Arts and the City
Exhibition - Symposium - Book Fair - Memorial
Opening: Wednesday, 14. September 2022, 6-9 PM
Venue: Kühlhaus Berlin, Luckenwalder Straße 3, 10963 Berlin (U Gleisdreieck)
Running time: 15.– 25. September 2022, Thursday–Sunday, 12AM–6 PM
(Guided tours are also possible outside of the opening hours according to previous arrangement)
Artistic transgressions and clandestine explorations of urban space, views from subterranean tunnels and canals, a house of cards as a construction site archive, vitreous security technologies, a pictorial piece of a border fence, improvised accommodations in living rooms, physical appropriations of public space, textile architectures, speculative narratives of the real estate market, ethnographic studies, delicate spatial collages and abstract pictorial spaces, testimonies to the urban landscape of Berlin. On the occasion of the Berlin Art Week 2022, the exhibition »Transgressive« is dedicated to the most diverse positions of contemporary international Berlin-based cultural producers, who are characterized by a crossborder approach to art and the city. All participants have in common a self-determined and subversive approach to urban space. From graffiti to cruising and queer spaces within the city, and from temporary architectures to forms of social activism, many of the works shown here find their origin in often unauthorized and sometimes even illegal urban practices. Over 40 participating artists from the visual and performing arts, architecture, and urban research will present a wide variety of anti-disciplinary artistic practices across three floors of the Kühlhaus Berlin – in media as diverse as painting, collage, sculpture, installation, film, photography, and performance. In their creative process, they all enter into close connections with the city, allowing the city to appear as the point of departure of their works. Among the participating artists are Akim, Clemens Behr, Ulrike Bernard, Rafaella Braga, Thomas Bratzke, Markus Butkereit, Boris D94, DIAMONDS, Brad Downey, Larissa Fassler, Anna Fiedler, Carolin Genz, Guerilla Architects, Jürgen Große, Marie Grunwald, Vincent Grunwald, Alice Hauck, Anna Herms, Wilhelm Klotzek, Fabian Knecht, Jeewi Lee, Van Bo Le-Mentzel, Mischa Leinkauf, Markus Mai, Kadir „Amigo“ Memiş, Adrian Nabi, Jana Sophia Nolle, Pigenius Cave, Poligonal. Büro für Stadtvermittlung, Katya Quel, Susi Rosenbohm, Thomias Radin, Sandra Rummler, Christian Schellenberger, Gabi Schillig, Osif Seiksuh, Diana Sirianni, Ronny Sonnenberg, Studio Alibi, Birgit Szepanski, The Wa, Katharina Trudzinski, Aylin Yildirim Tschoepe, Raul Walch, Daniel Weißbach, Laila Wiens, Eric Winkler and Jazoo Yang. The architectural firm Parasite 2.0 is responsible for the spatial and the designer and publisher Matthias Hübner for the graphic design of the exhibition. Thanks to an extensive supporting program of inspiring lectures, exciting discussions and performances, "Transgressive" will also become a place of participation and reflection, of contradictions and tensions. This is about producing knowledge about the dynamic evolution of strategies and tactics of urban practices in contemporary art discourse. A symposium will allow for the deepening and broadening of the content of the perspectives represented in the exhibition and the exploration of nonconformist approaches in artistic and scientific education. A one-day book fair allows participating artists and Berlin-based small publishers to present their books, catalogs, editions, magazines, and zines and to establish publishing as an artistic practice. A memorial event dedicated to the legacy of deceased Berlin graffiti sprayers will initiate the development of a global archive of oral histories of contemporary witnesses. Detailed information will follow shortly. The exhibition - realized with the kind support of the Hauptstadtkulturfonds - is

The world consists in all areas of transitions, which we as humans try to define in regularities. We involuntarily strive to find our place in these definitions, whose concatenation of systems describes the space in which we exist. Therefore, we may or may not view reality as a concatenation of properties that interact, condition each other, and produce new properties in exchange. However, these concepts can also be suspected of representing only part of the truth when comparing physical systems and snapshots of human structure.

Markus Butkereit stages objects and large-scale projections that play with the
visualization and interaction of different manifestations of matter.
What is visualized is a constantly repeating process of distribution,
separation and unification of matter, which can be experienced as sensual
and spatial simulations. Digital recordings of blowing dust reappear in a wide
variety of places and spaces, poetically referencing the process of dissolution
and the connections between people and their environment.

Markus Butkereit elaborates in an experimental trial the properties of the exhibition space as an interface to the environment and a possible system of permeability. Systems differ scientifically on the basis of interfaces and via their different exchanges with their environments. Through the different properties of exchanging matter and energy, it becomes clear whether the systems are either open, closed, or enclosed. However, open systems do not mean the same as permeable systems. Permeable refers to thin layers that allow other matter to pass through. In Permeable Systems, Markus Butkereit makes an attempt to navigate the different layers within the space and his artistic work. For this purpose, he designs a set-up in which the scaled-down objects of his experimental model series appear like props of actions to be retold. A studio situation in which there is potentially the possibility of separating each object and each person present from the background and translating them into other visual contexts.

How does one make a space visible? In what temporality do we perceive our surroundings and the movements that take place in them? How can we put the human body in relation to the particles it is made of?
Markus Butkereit presents "Suspension - Saltation - Reptation", an experimental arrangement that works along the border of visibility and invisibility. The objects visible in the exhibitions are actually only the device for the works exhibited. These could be described as temporary figures formed from dust and organized in point clouds. Butkereit's work is about creating a space in which it is possible to imagine what particles we ourselves are made of, in what arrangement these particles existed before they came together in the configuration that defines our bodies, and what happens to them after we die. The complexity of simple physical processes are staged with techniques from the field of special effects in cinema. This gives the viewer the opportunity to perceive himself and the surrounding space with its inherent processes from a different point of view. The question of of what is seen is staged and what could also be seen and experienced without the influence of the artist is deliberately raised. The viewer is called upon to examine and challenge his habits of seeing in the coordinate system of dust designed by Butkereit, in which he places himself in relation and can thus gain insights into scale and time.

The magazine contains essays written by Rose Pacult and Markus Butkereit and a poem by Diego Sologuren. It is a collection of various stories, poems and thought processes that all circulate around the cosmos of Markus Butkereit´s visions of particles. "Unfolded brings to the forefront a dialogue between particles role with space, consciousness, and wind; and points to particles as the foundation of a belief system, where the question is raised — can distribution of these infinite numbers of very small matter be the basis of existence and the reason for every single thing that happens to us, and outside of us?" Unfolded Perceptions
When lightning strikes, closely knit particles — (any very small subatomic piece) — separate. Dissolving from their previously closeness, a great charge releases from the separation. In Markus Butkereit’s show UNFOLDED PERCEPTIONS a theme emerges: the rearrangement and distribution of particles. UNFOLDED brings to the forefront a dialogue between particles role with space, consciousness, and wind; and points to particles as the foundation of a belief system, where the question is raised — can distribution of these infinite numbers of very small matter be the basis of existence and the reason for every single thing that happens to us, and outside of us? In it, there is a reflective quality of weather, how the fissuring of particles mirrors all communication flowing and scattering. Since every action causes a reaction, Markus Butkereit substantiates and affirms this law by showing how particles are broken up in the eye of a storm only to separate and spread to us. Like a tornado, chaos often ensues in the aftermath of disaster. The work distributes particles, which then moves with the wind. UNFOLDED PERCEPTIONS is always on the move, from the artist to the table to up and away from you. Space is the absence of the other; but what if in actuality hidden in what seems to be nothing is a presence so strong the very actions taken by you are dictated by the vacuum’s “nothingness”? In between each person, interaction, and occurrence are an astronomical number of small parts which move. Particles we cannot see, feel, touch, smell, or find, yet are there. Drawing from the physics of particle presentation, Buterkeit derives the installation UNFOLDED PRECEPTIONS from a tornado, and here, opens the realm to space. With the reservation and finesse of particles, the installation stands as a call for wind, power, and particles to be released and explored. In the center of the transportation medium, the production of wind moving, flowing, and exiting through a corridor into the chamber whips particles into a special formation. The air changes. New fields are excited into creation. Here is where the development of energy is key, as the field mixes movement and creates an entirely new mode of presence, existence, and state. From the pieces of the audience to dust trapped in the air, the installation is akin to a tornado’s possibility for disrupting and rearranging a setting. The moderator is the installation itself, with a program centering around the audience being the new creators of infinite forms of potential. As people move, so does the dispersion of particles.

The exhibition „Connected – East meets West“ presents the selection of video works by 14 international artists currently living and working in Berlin. Each of them has a different cultural and spatial background, artistic interests and portfolio, different ideas and ways of presenting it, but what binds them together is the courage to experiment and to rethink the video as an art form and a tool of global connection. To connect the two dots on a piece of paper in a shortest and most effective way, or any arbitrary points in any given space, is to draw a straight line between them; even our basic cognitive abilities recognize this as a definitive, apriori fact, without needing to think about the properties of a space in between. We can utilize various ways and means to define the straight line, our connection between two opposing points - measure it, or cut it to halves or smaller pieces, use it as a distance marker and so on. However, in terms such as East and West there is no such certainty, even as they are presented as defined, opposing points in our mental and physical landscape. The space connecting them can’t be defined by basic geometry, even if we manage to pull a straight line - if we try to define where one stops and the other begins, imaginary space attributed to certain point could turn our conclusions in Zeno’s arrows, floating in an infinity. Still, these terms are projected to physical space, often resulting in a barbed wire cutting through the scenic, flowery valley in the Alps, walls splitting city and its families to half, or a boats sinking in someone else’s part of sea – tragic and paradoxical, considering that the opposite and distant point could be just a click away, just a video away. The uncertainty of space connecting these seemingly opposite points is reflected on the gallery windows, as the works are exhibited on them – set in the undefined territory between the gallery space and the public space, it turns the tables around; the public is not invited to the exhibition, but the exhibition invites itself to public. The selection of works presents a wide variety of ways and means the artists are utilizing to define the connection - from long and detached documentaristic shots to rapid, hallucinative montages; from video-essays and sculptures to collages; from stories to accidents, the artists connect us with the spaces of beauty, satire and mystery that lay in latitudes of everyday, somewhere between us and the point B, be it east or west.

In order to buy time, find cover or hide, add smoke or ambiguous and confusing information!
It is relatively common for different meanings to share the same word. Paired with the increasing amount of information available online these days, this results in an evergrowing possibility of finding incorrect information due to confusion caused by ambiguous words.
Take, for example, the eighty - six transport dollies appearing in Markus Butkereits works “8 x 8 Möbelhunte”, “Der Stapel”, “Aufhängung für 6” and “Zwei Seile und vier Motoren”. These simple boards with wheels are also called "Hunte" or “Hunde” in German. The term, coming from the miner's language, refers to the open, box-shaped tramways, which were developed at the turn of the late Middle Ages to early modern times in order to increase the efficiency of coal extraction. „Hund“ is German for dog and Wikipedia quotes one source claiming the miners called the wagons „Hunde“ because of the noise they made on the tracks.
When further consulting the interwebs, one finds out that etymologically the English word “hunt” derives from the Old English “huntian” and that one of the meanings of the verb “hunt” is searching, seeking or being on an endeavour to find something. Whereas in the context of engineering, if something “hunts”, it is in a state of instability of movement, it oscillates about a desired speed, position or state.
All “Hunte” first had wooden disc wheels, which ran on wooden tracks, facilitating the transportation of ore tubs to and from the mines. Later, iron-reinforced angle rails were introduced and eventually, the entire railway system developed from the principle of the rail-bound “Hunt”. With the railway system came people writing on the trains, leaving their monikers or tags to hide their true identity. That was long before the Internet emerged, long before users leaving a trail of their personal data and interests while surfing and long before they started to wonder how to disappear in a fog of data.
In the early days trains were driven by draft animals, later they were powered by steam engines and then by electric and diesel engines. Speaking of engines, when a model rocket engine is ignited, the propellant burns, ejecting high-pressure gas out of the nozzle and producing thrust in the opposite direction. Once the propellant is completely consumed, the delay charge begins to burn. The delay charge has no driving force, but produces a smoke trail to better follow the rocket.
Figuratively, on the other hand, smoke (or fog) is associated with insignificance and transience. It refers to a condition of error, uncertainty, lostness and the grey area between reality and the state of the vague.

Markus Butkereits and Thomas Wiczaks work deals with the specific situations of Hammarkullens tram stop
and the limitations set up for artistic interventions in a semi-public space. As a result they have
developed site-specific works that deals with the characteristics of the station and its architecture.
It is a playful approach that invites people who pass the tram stop in their everyday to consider
the space in a new way.
Hammarkullen Konsthall is located in the underground stop Hammarkullen.

NOMADIC SPACES & FORMER FUTURE NOWS
NEGATING FORM - TRANSGRESSING LIMITS
31.10., 14:00 Uhr Workshop mit Alice Boorer und Heath Bunting
31.10., 18:00 - 22:00 Screening | Neue Nationalgalerie
Mit Videoarbeiten von Ulf Aminde, Markus Butkereit, Brad Downey, Niklas Goldbach, Judith Hopf,
Christian Jankowski, Adam Kraft & E.B. Itso, Hanna & Klara Lidén, Reuben Moss, NUG, Fernando Sánchez Castillo,
Santiago Sierra, Clemens von Wedemeyer, Matthias Wermke, Wermke/Leinkauf sowie Gemüsedöner von Jesus und
mobilen Beiträgen von Raul Walch, Yukihiro Taguchi uvm. Die Zukunft des Städtischen ist ungewiss. Doch schon
Negating the form - transgressing the limits Was passiert, wenn Visionen sich überleben, wenn Architektur scheitet
Visionen vergangener Utopien reagieren? Provozieren gescheiterte Räume gar Gewalt und Vandalismus, wie Oskar Newman
einst vermutete?
from the past for a post apocalyptic future now“ mit Alice Vandeleur Boorer und heath bunting voran.

"B.Z.Z.T. - Newspaper"
Edition 1/4/2014
"Today everyone takes part in public executions through the newspapers. Like everything else, however, it is more comfortable
than it was. We sit peacefully at home and, out of a hundred details, can choose those to linger over which offer a special
thrill. We only applaud when everything is over and there is no feeling of guilty connivance to spoil our pleasure. We are not
responsible for the sentence, not for the journalists who report its execution, nor for the papers which print them. None the less,
we know more about the business than our predecessors, who may have walked miles to see it, hung around for hours and, in the end,
seen very little. The baiting crowd is preserved in the newspaper reading public, in a milder form it is true, but, because of its
distance from events, a more irresponsible one. One is tempted to say that it is the most despicable and, at the same time,
most stable form of such a crowd. Since it does not even have to assemble, it escapes disintegration; variety is catered for
by the daily re-appearance of the papers."

Currated by Roberta Pagani
Associazione Barriera
11 settembre – 11 ottobre 2013
Via Crescentino 25
Torino/ Italy
Opening/ 11 September 2013/ 18:00
Fra-biancoshok, Gec, dott. Porka’s, the Wa, artisti in mostra di Public Arena, intendono dichiarare

Klick on the link above to see everything of the Invisible Cities/ Ruse on google maps.
Invisible Cities - Ruse is the first part of Markus Butkereit’s project which was realized during
his three-month stay in Ruse. Markus Butkereit gets under the city to an invisible plane:
abandoned grounds, bunkers, old industrial buildings, schools in ruins.
He runs and rides his bike round corners where for a long time there hasn’t been a living soul
because these places and buildings were abandoned and have ceased to exist, they are nothing more
than „the inferno of the living“.
“The inferno of the living“, thus describes them Marco Polo in Calvino’s book The Invisible Cities,
“is not something that will be; if there is one, it is what is already here, the inferno where we
live every day, that we form by being together. There are two ways to escape suffering it.
The first is easy for many: accept the inferno and become such a part of it that you can no longer
see it. The second is risky and demands constant vigilance and apprehension: seek and learn to
recognize who and what, in the midst of inferno, are not inferno, then make them endure,
give them space.”
A lot of such places have become invisible in Ruse. Life have stopped there like time with a
stopwatch and no one ever came back. Scattered coffee cups, playing cards, instruments, everything is
still where it has been left. Time stood still but life outside went on as usual.
In his work Markus Butkereit researched different abandoned places, mapped them all and documented
his discoveries on numerous photos. The arranged map, which is to be found on Google Maps, creates in
the digital world a new presence for the invisible cities and their places.

"Dr. Mabuse"
Addict Gallery
14/16 rue de Thorigny
75003 Paris/ France
Opening/ 10.09.2011 18:00 - 21:00
During its last spring retrospective dedicated to the Urban Design most innovative artists, ADDICT Gallery presented Markus Butkereit’s work,
" TRYONE ", a German painter born in 1976, who is living in Berlin. With energy and a speed of singular execution, the artist let arise from the
deepest of himself a spontaneous pictorial language such as Minotaur who did not seem painted but written on his paintings.
Markus Butkereit's approch is that of a child who does not judge the world but tries to re-transcribe it in a raugh way without the re-creation filter,
i.e. the reinterpretation. In this first personal exhibition, Markus Butkereit makes its artist's writing by imagining what he names beyond any
traditional calligraphy's codes. This time, he is inspired by the neurosis of "Dr Mabuse", hero Fritz Lang's movie of 1922. In his psychiatric
cage the famous criminal rashes in space an illegible message. In reality, he reproduces under the dictation of his unconscious, his hallucinated
vision of murder before putting on paper his visions in a kind of an evil automatic writing. Markus Butkereit does not paint a murderer portrait
but seeks, signals that he sends, to unscramble the human being dark face, his taste for the sufferance and death of the other.
For that, he just has to let go his drives. His approach, freed from any preconceived intention, lets the unconscious express itself in a
spontaneous way. Images are then born which overlap in brilliant setfeelings to their contained or amputated in their expression. Fragments of words,
forms in tatters torn from the night, ghostly and threatening sketches overlap such strata which, in dazzling burst coming from the depths of the
being, reveal one by one the geology of unconscious. Then occurs a reading by fission of this compact and mysterious nucleus which constitutes
the essence of man. From there, the surprising energy, truly nuclear, which gets free of the work Signs, forms, explosions of images,
such asteroids floating in a univers never investigated, are suspended in an opened space thanks to the destruction of the traditional language codes.
Markus Butkereit remains the painter of the creative disintegration. On the occasion of this first personal exhibition in Paris.

"Diamonds - Supersentai"
Lucas Carrieri Art Gallery
Potsdamerstr.103
10785 Berlin
Opening/ 29.04.2011 19:00
29.04.11 - 28.05.11
The presented works both document and reference the collective’s artistic workflow. The creative conceptions, agreements, and conflicts
that may have occurred at any given meeting manifest themselves on paper via further development, repainting, and destruction.
The resultant images bear a rather complex visuality, thus offering the recipient’s eye constantly new and multi-layered experiences.
The show consists of large-format drawings and paintings from the years 2009–2011. They illustrate and highlight the overall development
of the collaboration. "Diamonds", as the name of the collective of six artists, hints at the artistic subject and, by the same token,
stresses its anonymity: the individual contribution moves into the background, fading into oblivion. Biography "Diamonds" is an
artist group consisting of Dez78, Daniel Tagno, Markus Mai, Osif Seiksuh, P. Vector Codierer and Tryone. Each of the six is rooted
in Berlin’s parallel and sub worlds, particularly in graffiti writing. However, their work differs considerably with regard to technique
and artistic approach. In 2007, they formed the group, declaring the aim to discover and develop new forms of imagery by combining each
individual’s expression and methods. The collective authorship functions as a catalyst, adding a new and fresh approach to each
contribution while simultaneously challenging each author to lend his individual view to the new context. The process of the writing
itself – notions and abilities, handling of typographic characters, a fast and focussed labour, immediate reactions – expresses an
important element of the workflow that is visibly imminent in the paintings. Manifested in overpainting and abolishment, one feels
the apparent confrontational character of the works. The images convey fastness and suspense, reflecting the tension in the convergence
of different influences and experiences. They result in graphical experiments, rudimentary characters and quotes from pop culture.
Improvisation and spontaneity are deliberately and pointedly applied elements of the creative process. The resulting works are rather
complex visual worlds, presenting the viewer with new and multi-layered pictorial experiences.

"Wir sind nicht die Affen in deiner Horde"
Dtagno & Markus Butkereit
26.06. - 04.07.2009
Urban art info
“Part of the human remains animal, nonreflective and instinctual.
The human as a compulsive sense-producing being finds designations
like love and hate, heat and cold, day and night, black and white,
to express his inability to explain things completely.
Therefore the human, as a bearer of these extremes,
is constantly at odds with himself. Unlike the animal,
he constructs his own reality and thus becomes his own god.
This human likes nothing more than returning to animalism,
though he can never be anything but human. He thus fulfils his role,
which becomes part of universal truth.”
